Dr. Thompson is the author of the book Cold War Country: How Nashville’s Music Row and the Pentagon Created the Sound of American Patriotism, published by the University of North Carolina Press and finalist for the 2024 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in History.

3:00 p.m.: RESEARCH PANEL: Jack McGovern, Ph.D. Candidate in Political Science at Northwestern University

Jack McGovern is a Ph.D. candidate in Political Science in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. His research examines the evolution of the Republican Party since the 1960s, with a special focus on immigration policy. He was awarded the Robert and Elizabeth Dole Archive and Special Collections Research Fellowship and the Harry Middleton Fellowship in Presidential Studies from the LBJ Foundation. He will discuss his research as well as his work and planned work at several ACSC member repositories, including the the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics, the Dirksen Congressional Center, the Carl Albert Congressional Research and Studies Center, and others.

Gregg Harper (R-MS) and Chip Pickering (R-MS)

Congressman Gregg Harper served Mississippi’s Third Congressional District from 2009-2019, where he served as Chairman of the Committee on House Administration and the Joint Committee of Congress on the Library. He was well known throughout the Hill for his love of archives and history and for his guided tours of the Capitol. Congressman Pickering served MS-03 in Congress from 1997-2009 and is now the CEO of INCOMPAS, the leading trade association advocating for competition policy across internet, streaming, communications, and technology networks. He was only the second Republican elected to from MS-03 since Reconstruction. Both Harper’s and Pickering’s papers are housed at Mississippi State University Libraries.

The Stennis Center for Public Service was established by Congress as a living tribute to the public service career of John C. Stennis. The Stennis Center develops and delivers a portfolio of unique programs for young people, leaders in local, state and federal government and congressional staff. These programs promote public service as a noble calling, enhance leadership skills and foster relationships among leaders with similar concerns. Stennis Center Executive Director Brian Pugh and Director of Civil-Military Programs Charlie Abell will discuss the many programs offered by the Center, including the Civil-Military Leadership Dialogue and Discussion Programs, which bring together top leaders from the military and Congress.

Named after Mississippi State University alumni, Senator John C. Stennis and Congressman G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery, the Stennis-Montgomery Association (SMA) allows students of all backgrounds and academic disciplines to become active on the political scene. Each year the most dedicated members of the organization visit Washington D.C., to meet and network with MSU alumni and other prominent political figures.

The Stennis-Montgomery Association is a non-partisan, student organization heavily involved on the Mississippi State Campus. The purpose of the organization is to provide opportunities for students to learn more about the role of politics in Mississippi.
